ESP32 Renewable-Energy Data Logger: Field data acquisition

Overview

An ESP32 station for renewable-energy sites. It reads voltage, current, wind speed, temperature, humidity and solar irradiance, timestamps every sample with NTP, writes CSV to an SD card, publishes over MQTT and shows status on an LCD. The pyranometer is read over RS-485 with Modbus RTU.

The challenge

Remote sites need a local record that survives network outages, live data when the link is up, and support for industrial sensors that only speak Modbus RTU.

Key capabilities

  • Voltage, current, wind, DHT22 and irradiance sensing
  • NTP-timestamped CSV logging to SD
  • MQTT publishing with automatic reconnect
  • Modbus RTU (function 0x04) over RS-485
  • I2C LCD status display and standalone sensor test sketch

Outcomes

  • No data loss during outages thanks to local SD logging
  • Industrial-grade sensor integration over Modbus RTU
  • Every sample traceable to an exact time
