Hybrid PV-Wind-Battery Energy System: Energy systems modelling

Overview

A MATLAB/Octave tool that models hourly PV and wind output, simulates battery state of charge against the load, and reports reliability, levelised cost of energy, payback and CO2 avoided for each scenario, with sensitivity analysis on battery size and PV/wind mix. The Kuwait study runs on PVGIS-SARAH3 data for 2020.

The challenge

Choosing between solar, wind and storage takes more than nameplate capacity. The right mix depends on local resources, load profile and cost, and the decision needs numbers.

Key capabilities

  • PV and wind generation models, including an MPPT and temperature variant
  • Hourly battery simulation with efficiency and charge limits
  • LCOE, capital cost, payback and CO2 calculations
  • Five-scenario comparison and sensitivity analysis
  • Kuwait case study on PVGIS-SARAH3 data (2020)

Outcomes

  • Kuwait study: PV + battery gave the lowest cost of energy, $0.215/kWh, and the highest reliability, 56.6%
  • Payback of about 6 years for the PV + battery system
  • Clear, data-backed recommendation for a PV-dominant design
