Energy-Aware LEO Satellite Routing: Network simulation and satellite communications

Overview

A MATLAB/Octave framework that simulates a satellite constellation on Keplerian orbits. Links appear and drop with range, a modified Dijkstra weighs latency against remaining battery, and a handover module predicts when a route will break. A multi-orbit edition adds several altitudes and solar charging.

The challenge

Shortest-path routing drains the same satellites repeatedly, and LEO links change every few minutes. Routing has to balance delay and energy and switch paths before a link drops.

Key capabilities

  • Satellite model with Keplerian or linear motion
  • Energy-aware Dijkstra that avoids low-battery nodes
  • Proactive handover based on link stability
  • Energy consumption and solar recharge models
  • Multi-orbit simulation, performance metrics and 2D/3D visualisation
