Python/OpenCV Image Processing

Canny edge detection built from scratch and benchmarked against OpenCV, plus SIFT and ORB feature matching.

Python/OpenCV Image Processing: Computer vision

Overview

Two computer-vision pipelines. The first implements every stage of Canny edge detection and compares it with cv2.Canny across four settings with a difference map. The second extracts and matches SIFT and ORB features between two images and times each method.

The challenge

A library call hides how the algorithm behaves. Building Canny stage by stage shows the effect of each parameter and gives a reference to judge the library output.

Key capabilities

  • Every Canny stage, from Gaussian smoothing to hysteresis
  • Comparison with OpenCV across four settings
  • ORB keypoint extraction and display
  • SIFT and ORB matching with timing
  • Portable output paths for any machine
